@Trajan730 Please excuse me, I missed your correction though the rest of my previous post still stands.

@Trajan730 First of all, it's WW1, not WW2 and secondly, the whole point of the denouement of the film in the final, big scene was to show that it was the Machiavellian machinations of Gen. Broulard (Menjou) that got rid of that over-weening Gen. Mireau; he was actually the real hero of the film.
Gen. Broulard had to hang Gen. Mireau by his own petard; it couldn't have been done any other way even if it shattered a division and killed another three, totally innocent men.

@Trajan730 WW1 actually....

@verbusen In a free society people should be able to support, organize for, and propagandize for whatever they want as long as they do so non violently, including communism. McCarthy used the power of the state to intimidate and harass free people in the private sector. Have you so little confidence in liberty that you would use the government against some limousine socialists and left wing agitators? Did you learn nothing about "patriotism" from this film? To Trajan730: This took place during World War I, not WW2.

E P Thompson reckons the war was fought due to train timetables, it was impossible to adapt quickly to military manoeuvers, so, once one side began to mobilise, their opponents must also, immediately, or risk an enemy with all his troops in place, while your own were days away. So brinksmanship became war, at a time when defensive military technology was ascendant, ( armies had barbed wire and machine guns, but no tanks) Generals found this..embarassing,this is Kubrick's film.
Yes I admit putting a 2 instead of a 1 for the world war concerned. Well done for picking my error up everyone and I hope it made your day. How petty and yet most of you did not comment on the movie itself apart from some right wing nut.

@Trajan730 Thanks for saying your things.
Yes, you're right what tou are saying.
You have said it well in the first place.
It doesn't matter how people react at it.
Thanks for telling and putting it away with it.

Kirk was in his prime with this performance. His magnificent vitriolic final blast at Adolphe Menjou was helped by his personal distaste for Menjou in real life. Menjou had testified against actors, writers and other hollywood staff in the McCarthy witchhunts of the early 1950's. Powerfull, razor sharp expose of the incompetance and criminal neglect of the general staff during WW2. The final scenes of this movie are classic and spot on. Brilliant.
