eastern new mexico university in roswell has just announced a new "green degree"... that's the first of its kind in new mexico. starting this fall... students can learn everything there is to know about renewable energy. joe bartels has a look at the new two year program. the classrooms are empty right now but in the fall officials at enmu-r hope 50 or more students will be learning all there is to know about clean energy. "it looks like the wave of the future is going to be renewable energy. we just have to get away from fuels that we have to import into the united states." in a partnership with xcel energy-- the university built these solar panels. students will learn how the panels work and even how they are built. but in a field that is still relatively new---there are challenges in teaching developing technology. "one of the biggest challenges is trying to find books for students. there are very few books that have been written." brown says unlike other programs-- the applied science associate degree at enmu-r will give students a foundation in not only solar... but wind, bio mass and geothermal energy. "on a daily basis i get anywhere from 4 to 5 phone calls from students interested in the proam." "we're going to see solar grow just like wind has grown and with that comes the need for personnel that can install, maintain and repair solar installations." there are growing opportunities to put this degree to use. officials with xcel energy say they have plans to build two solar facilities in new mexico in the next few years. that was joe bartels reporting. officials at eastern new mexico--roswell say they will do more than teach about renewable energy. they will also reach out to elementary schools and the public
if there isnt alot of math i would love to go to school for newable energy
