The Galactico Counter

During the first Galáctico era Real Madrid faced ultra-defensive formations and tight man-marking in fear of their big name players. Madrid would take advantage of this fear by, when regaining the ball, keeping possession instead of launching it forward and instantly attacking. Forcing the opposition to close down dangerous playmakers like Zidane and Figo. This tactic created space in midfield to allow another player to play a killer pass for Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's extraordinary pace, power and ability allowed him to latch on to these passes and finish with devastating effect. Madrid would vary this tactic over different games sometimes using it to save Zidane from wearing himself out, to accommodate Raul or to give Roberto Carlos space on the wing. Especially after Ronaldo's numerous injuries.
