Fes Napuan 2009- the biggest musical festival in Vanuatu, featuring international artists from all over the world. Here I am performing with a group called Krosrod, a collection of very talented musicians who have toured countries in the South Pacific and Europe. John is the main singer of the group- but he plays the saxophone only during this performance. Richard Simbolo, a friend from Tongoa, sings Reggae melodies for the chorus. Ken and Paul play the keyboards, Sully is the bassist, John is on the drums and there is an electric guitarist as well. There were well over a thousand people in attendance at this concert, which was filmed for international television, streamed live on the internet and played on the national radio channels of Vanuatu. When rapping in Bislama, the pigeon language of Vanuatu, I go by the name of Nawarake- which is the custom name given to me on the island of Aneityum. The first song performed is about the island of Aneityum, where I am based as a Peace Corps volunteer and kava, the narcotic drink of choice in the South Pacific. After the first song is over, I drink a cup on kava on stage, the effects of which I would feel halfway through the second song. The second song is entitled, "Yo," and is about island life in general, listing many of the islands in Vanuatu.
