a pre-op transsexual went on a one-woman demonstration on the streets of Shenzhen, holding a placard that says, "I want a sex change, even if it means death!" (我要变性!死了都要变!) She attracted a huge crowd around her before she was eventually led away by someone from the public security bureau it seems.

Despite increasing openness, transsexuals have not had it easy in China. If this report dated this time last year is anything to go by, only about 1,000 transsexuals have undergone the operation, and that's just a tiny fraction of the 400,000 transsexuals that experts estimate China has. As many as 90 percent of them commit suicide when their appeal to have a sex change is turned down.

Sex change first received media spotlight in 1995 when dance choreographer Jin Xing underwent sex change to become a woman. She was an army colonel dancing with the People's Liberation Army dance troupe. Now arguably the most celebrated face of Chinese modern dance, Jin is now enjoying her life as a woman, married to a German man and has three adopted children.

  • This girl is so brave to do this single person protest. The girl has ballz, lol.

  • If the Catholic Church had it's way transgendered and homosexual people in the west would be treat just as badly; the clock can turn backwards on these thngs just as easily as it can turn forwards. If China remains secular they might be teaching us about human rights in twenty years.

  • Brave girl, God willing she got what she wished.

Communism has nothing to do with why transexual people are not accepted. Plenty of other places in this world which are just as bad on this issue.

  • She is a good looking girl. is she still alive?

  • Just give her the damned sex change already!

  • People forget that china is still a communist state. 20 years ago it was unthinkable to have so many foreigners, capitalism, be homosexual in China but look how much has changed since then. Give it a few more years and China will be ready. You cannot expect a country that was an extremist communist state 20 years ago to become the role model of human-rights today.

  • Why alot of people still are so ignorant and cruel; I really don't understand it. A big step to a human rights.
