Is the unlockable stuff free and customizable and playable?

Or do I need to buy a PSN-Card to buy outifts and karts? Or is it unlockable just by completing races and making progress through-out the game? And is the unlockable stuff customizable? (Like Little Big Planet=Maps & characters, Modern Warfare 2=Weapons, Rainbow Six Vegas 2=Characters, etc.)
