@INSANESUICIDE . . . it was truer to the book than the movie. .

I watched this when I was a child and I thought it was a movie. I think I'll watch this again!

Do not watch this newer one, it is shit, it totally changes the story, the events, and everything, it even changes the plot. It totally and utterly ruins Dune as if that could be possible.
This abominable piece of shit is but an insult to the great books, if you have any taste at all, or like the books, then do not endure this horrible piece of trash.
I watched the whole thing in hope of better special effects then in the original, and that was the only thing I got. Waste of my time. and yours

The 1984 movie was atrocious. I just finished watching this and found it very good. Yes the effects and productions values were poor by todays standards but it was made in the late 90's and is very passable. Especially considering it was made for TV. I loved the book and think that the only possible way to fully do it justice is with a full TV series with high production values. Look at what was possible with Batttlestar Gallactica...

@samusdrake the movie was horribly unbearable.

Production value and acting wise, not as good as the film(Chani the exception), but the story is very faithful to the book and makes this a great watch.
Children of Dune is just as good.

I liked this version more than David Lynch’s version and it is actually more faithful, but it still was not perfect. What I liked the most was how they depicted the mystic of the Bene Gesserit and the mystery of Spacing Guilt. The acting was great so was the sets but the special effect left a lot to desire. Still is a most see. I miss when it used to be SciFi… not syfy!

Remember when the Sci-Fi (not SyFy) Channel actually attempted to make surprisingly faithful adaptations of classic SF novels? Instead of Ghost Crap and Wrestling?

They absolutely butchered the book in this miniseries. I literally couldn't get through the entire first movie on the sheer number of differences from the book.
I can understand small details, and skipping parts for the sake of movie time and keeping an audience - but full, important, involved details from the book were outright ignored or slaughtered to resemble some morbid abomination of the intended piece of work. Horrible.
If you appreciate the books don't even touch this garbage.
Thank you for saying that. Really! lol
