Nick waited for an answer, but none came. Mr Portman recognized his own name, and stopped mumbling. Perhaps he felt a self awareness. He tried to pick himself up, but he couldnt. Nick caught his arms, and though Delia's dad was three times his own size, he managed to lift him and lean him against the wall.
- Sir? He asked again.
- Hmph! Was all Mr Portman could reply. He still didnt seem to recognize the boy helping him.
Nick eventually gave up trying to talk to him and put the big man's arm around his neck, and began to drag him in the direction of his hotel. But he only managed to walk one block when he had to take his first break. He put the drunken man on the sidewalk, with his back against the wall, and sat down beside him.
- Who are you? Asked Mr Portman, all of a sudden.
Nick was taken by surprise, but he answered immediately.
- Its me, Nick. Delia's friend.
- Delia! He shouted. Where is Delia?
- Uhm, she's home.
- I have a daughter Delia..
- That's who I'm talking about, answered Nick.
- She looks just like her mother, and she even hates me, like her mother..
- She doesn't hate you, began Nick.
- Melanie too!! She was my daughter too!! I lost both of'em!
Nick shook his head and spoke to himself - How did I get into this? Why didn't I just stay home?
- Delia!! Came his cry.
Nick didn't know what to say, or how to feel for this man. Although he hated what he had done to Delia, he began to feel sorry for him, and he didn't want to feel sorry. But how could he just leave him there, in his own misery? He had to help him, to take him home.
- Mr Portman, do you know who I am? Asked Nick, clear and firm.
Delia's father understood the words and looked closely at Nicks face.
- You're one of the three, he said.
- That's good enough, replied Nick. Now listen to me, Sir, I have to take you home.
- To Delia? He asked.
- No, I can't take you there. I'm taking you to my hotel room.
- Take me home! Yelled Mr Portman.
Nick resigned, he couldn't argue when he saw in what state his guest was. He would tell him whatever he wanted to hear, so long as he would cooperate.
- All right, sir, I'll take you home, but you have to get up and walk.
The man didn't move. Nick stood up and reached out his hand. But he was ignored. Mr Portman seemed to be in a trance. Nick waited. He could hear voices coming towards them. "Great", he thought, "That's the last thing I need right now!". He tucked his chin into his shirt and looked away from the people who were coming on the same street, towards him. He heard their laughter stop as they were close enough to see what was going on. Then a girl's voice spoke to him.
- Is he alright? She asked.
Nick froze stiff. The softness in her voice was so familiar. He turned to face her. And he froze again. It was the same girl who he had seen in the bar, the same girl who had sang, the same girl he had dreamed about. She was just a few steps away from him. And she looked worried, worried for the drunken man lying on the ground, next to him.
