See http://www.barobo.com A novel modular robot design that incorporates four controllable degrees of freedom made up of two outer sections, and rotating faceplates at the ends of each outer section. The outer faceplates can rotate continuously, which enables individual modules to turn while crawling, or drive as though with wheels. This significantly increases the mobility of each module, allowing it to traverse a wide variety of terrain without an overcomplicated physical shape.

  • Nice.

  • It awsome !

    maybe a bit smaller

  • Don't you think circular wheels would work better

  • It's obvious this design was inspired by the MTRAN modular robot. I do like the rotating plates for faster locomotion.

  • @akelodmc, you are just paranoid. Imagine how much raw materials are on other planets, asteroids, comets, etc. If we could send out a ship that has self-replicating and material harvesting robots, then we could keep the supply of oh-so-needed materials indefinitely. For example the computer you're using now most likely uses a hard drive that has a magnet alloy of which one of the components is the rare earth material neodymium, which the Earth doesn' t have much left.

    Résumé - we need this!

  • Fortunately Incredible. WOW.

  • this reminds me of the movie THE IRON GIANT where at the end the beacon in his head signals all of his body-parts to come back to his position and join back together.

  • @MrDangerpig Thank u, That solved it. hehe, does the worm :D

  • @WORMSStube set quality to 480p to make it play

  • Thumbs up if Gizmodo sent you here!
