Short video showing how great Sibelius's "old" chord symbols are. In Sibelius 6, they are called "legacy chords".

  • Thanks for the reply Ykif. Still a bit confused, if you look on the character map(i assume you mean the bit in windows accessories), you have to select the font your looking at, so do you use the the unicode font or select the sibelius font you're currently using for chord symbols?

  • @hungrydave1977

You select the font you use in Sibelius.

  • ok, figured it out... But how did you know that e_ would produce a tied quaver?

  • @hungrydave1977

I just tried out different combinations until I found the right one. I could also have looked it up from the character map which shows the glyphs available in a font and which character codes they have. A similar utility comes with both Mac and Windows, though on the Mac it's not so easy to find (press Cmd+Alt+T and select Glyph view mode).

  • I recently got this software and made some songs. I posted them if anyones interested in what you can do with it.

  • @YkiF : Thanks a million, this is such a fantastic little workaround, I don't know why it's not standard in the program!!!! cheers!!!!

  • @YkiF ; thanks so much, this is going to save so much time, and free up the stave!!!!

  • @vintagekeys76: Sorry, I accidentally deleted your comment. Anyway, you need o have "legacy chord symbol input" turned on (step 1 above), to access the word menu.

Enter a new chord symbol with Cmd/Ctrl-K, and right-click with the mouse to see the word menu, where you can select the tied eight-note you added in steps 2-7.

  • @vintagekeys76:

    1. Turn on Preferences / Other / Chord Symbols / Use legacy chord symbol input.

    2. Go to Preferences / Word Menus.

    3. Click "Chords (standard)" to activate it.

    4. In the "Edit Words" section, press the New button to get a new entry "New Word" in the Words list.

    5. Edit the Text property (in the upper right corner), and replace it with "e_" (without quotes).

    6. Turn on "Use music text font".

    7. Click Apply.

Now you should see your new word menu entry, a tied eight-note.

  • cont..

actual menu i use in the program.

I've experimented with adding this U+00B1 thingy in the word menus and got nowhere.

There seems to be three different menu sets ie:

    - the one you actually use (small staff text)

    - the ones in pref/word menu's (expression text etc

    - the actual fonts (reprise script/reprise chords)

What a complicated system! I just want to have some basic symbols to choose from when i right click!!!

  • Sorry, i know this is a late reply, but i'm still having trouble with this. I'm trying to add maj7 (delta) and half diminished (cicle with diagonal stroke) symbols to standard text menu's. When i look on character map, i can find the half dim symbol i want under the font 'reprise chords'. When i select it, it says at the bottom: "U+00B1: Plus-Minus sign". So now i try to add this to the word menus, but i have no idea which one, because none of them are called small staff text which is the

  • ...and on the matter of the new chord symbol system. I don't like it, as it doesn't allow you to use (natural)13 after a 7. Which means you encounter the old problem of having:

Ab13. Does this mean Ab with a 13 or A with a flat13. It's confusing. When i'm sight reading dominant7 chord symbols. I wanna see C7 (13,b9) for example, and the new chord symbol system has killed that option.

It could easily be fixed with a checkbox saying: Always show the 7 on dominant chord extensions.
