Assignment for multimedia class at Marshall University, WV
Going into this project I wasn't sure where to go to do this. I don't really go a lot of places besides work home, and school because all the time I have is spent in these three places. I travel for one of my jobs but I don't get a lot of time to explore. So the most difficult thing about this project was to find a Public Place, that which seemed a bit neglected. I had a few different places in mind, some of which I was afraid of being robbed, or the lighting was just too awful to record in.
Then, I remembered how I hated the Smith Hall basement, because of its smell, and its loud and odd noises. It doesn't seem like a soul stays there for more than the least amount of time possible. Upkeep of the paint, ceilings, and well pretty much anything else was low, and seemed half assed when even done so. It was perfect.
During the project, I had an abundance of odd things to pick out to film. I decided to stick to just where the elevators were and concentrate on this one particular section of the basement. It was loud, and dirty, and full of interesting cracks in the walls, bad paint jobs as well as dust and cob webs.
I had about 4 people during the whole recording walk through my path, and each said hi and didn't linger a minute longer. This was a public place, but an unwelcoming and uncomfortable one at that.
I took shot after shot, playing with focus, lighting, positions, and perspectives. I found this project to be fun and playful. It taught me to pay more attention to even the things that I pass every day that usually I just brush off. Everything can become interesting and art, if given the chance. This day, I gave Smith Hall Basement a chance...and it was worth it!
Youtube added 1 second to my video BRENT!! I SWEAR it was 2:00 to begin with...I am not uploading this again..
