Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897)
Drei Quartette op. 64
Der Abend, text by Friedrich von Schiller

Marlis Petersen, Stella Doufexis, Werner Güra, Konrad Jarnot, Camillo Radicke, Christoph Berner

Senke, strahlender Gott, die Fluren dürsten
Nach erquickendem Tau, der Mensch verschmachtet,
Matter ziehen die Rosse,
Senke den Wagen hinab.
[Strahlender Gott, senk ihn hinab!]1

Liebe. Ruhet und liebet!
Phöbus, der Liebende, ruht.

  • Do these folks do other songs together too? I would love to get the CD.

  • I heard Werner Güra say in an interview that they were supposed to record a CD with Schumann quartets in June - and I'm scanning the Harmonia Mundi homepage daily, hoping they'll release it for Christmas. As for the Brahms Liebeslieder-Walzer CD, it's all on YT...;)

  • tooooo good. perfect brahms technique with amazing german diction. anyone hear that tenor?!?!?!?!? too good.

the duets always kill me in this piece.

  • That tenor?? That is Werner Güra and I featured him plenty on my channel coz he is simply the best lied singer of our day!!

  • what a beautiful journey. I enjoy this so much, thanks!!

  • oh - this ever waving and overwhelming brahms, living in vienna, I know this so well

  • Can I buy this version on iTunes? I love the blend of these specific voices!

  • Wonderful! Much better than my choir back in the day :)

  • I absolutely love this song we sang this at my college but we did not sound as wonderful as this

  • This is my favorite song my choir's going to be performing.

But if you're asking for the English translation, I think you'd be better off not knowing, lol.

  • que maravilla, si alguien me canta como esos hombres, caigo a sus pies. que obra tan sensual y que hermosa dicción
