After a slow year for the mobile phone market, 2009 should go out on a high according to analyst firm Gartner.
Worldwide sales of mobile phones has topped 308 million units in the third quarter according to Gartner's research.
And out of those 41 million were smartphones sales, which shows a 13 per cent rise of more advanced mobile technology from the previous quarter.
Gartner pegs open platforms as having the most impact on the market in the future.
The analyst firm's research director says open platforms will make it harder for new mobile devices, including Android smartphones, to stand out.
As a aresult, Gartner expects to see a squeeze on price in the increasingly competitive mobile device market.
