Hostelling lost two legends in 2010, when our friends Ruth and Bill Nelson passed away within days of each other. Ruth and Bill met in 1940, when Ruth took a summer job with a fledgling organization called American Youth Hostels (AYH)
in nearby Northfield, onsite at America's first youth hostel.

Over the course of seven decades, the Nelsons were among AYH's and later Hostelling International USA's (HI-USA) most active supporters. In the early 1950s, following his military service, Bill became the AYH Travel Director, where he would remain until his retirement. During this time Ruth managed several hostels, tended to a growing family and provided Bill with immeasurable support. Bill took great pride in telling friends and acquaintances that he "held every position at AYH except Executive Director, and I didn't want that one." In 1983, HI-USA named its Excellence in Hostel Management Award after Bill and Ruth Nelson. They remained closely connected with the organization as a volunteers, donors and "Living Treasures" until their deaths.

They are remembered by the many thousands of people they met along way traveling and managing youth hostels.
