WONG:
And a sobering thought for the thousands left with no homes to go back to in China. Survivors have fled to shelter in nearby towns, camping in relief-issue tents. Many have no solid plans for the future.

Sleeping rough and afraid to go home. Millions of people in China have lost their homes and families and face months living in temporary camps. Many more are sleeping on the streets.

[Mi Yong, Mianyang Resident]:
"Theres no choice, we dare not move back, there is a huge crack running down the building,"

Powerful aftershocks still rattle the area two weeks after the earthquake hit Sichuan province. Evacuees from Beichuan, one of the worst hit towns have set up their own communities in nearby safer Mianyang. Despite the basic living conditions they prefer to camp on concrete than go home.

[Beichuan, Evacuee]:
"I dare not go back, everything is shaking, there's no food, no road and no water. There's flooding and everyone has run away."

Schools have set up temporary bases outdoors, many of the victims of the quake were students. Makeshift hospitals in the camps are still treating the injured and the evacuees wait - unsure how to rebuild their lives.

Two weeks after the earthquake and the temporary camps are beginning to feel permanent. But tents are in short supply and hygiene and fresh water are becoming a problem.
