A 10 minutes lesson on reading music for drums. I can't cover everything but I can cover the most likely things you are going to see in books and magazines.

  • What is the song in the start??

  • @ParkiieHD It's my band playing an old blues song called "Snatch it back". The whole song is up on our web site scoopdevilleband

  • very i cool i actually take a music theory class. i like ur drum set i have a roland set and the same heads as u what kind of electric is urs?!

  • The electronic kit in my lessons is the original V-Drum TD-10 from Roland. The brain was upgraded with the TDW-1 patch they put out several years later. My acoustic set is Tama's ArtStar II series.

  • At 2:12 you start talking about the dots. I don't get it. What do they mean? What does a quarter note with a dot behind it sound like? Is there an extra beat/note??

  • The dot represents 1/2 the original value of the note that precedes the dot. So a dotted eighth note would take up the "time" for an eighth note and a sixteenth note.

It probably seems needlessly complicated to you but once you get used to the convention it actually makes sight reading easier.

  • Hey, this really helped me thanks.

  • i already know how to read music but not while im playing too well, i want to get faster at it, are there any special tricks that can help me get faster quicker or is it just locking myself in my garage and practice practice practice?

  • uncle Tod, i'd like to thank you for being my you tube drum instructor. i've learnt how to play the drums thanks to these videos.

  • Thanks dude, atleast someone out there is better than my retarded parents. Who could like them? Well at least who would like my irish step dad! Keep teaching, keep drumming!

  • tnx man

  • You are very better than my School's music teacher....i never got the counting like 1-e, 2-e, 3-e, 4-e...he always confused me but you pretty much explaing it to me! thank you for helping me on that at least! we always learn something new everyday!

  • ?? hieroglyphics ..... theory nah, pratical yeah!! lets make some noise

  • @jamor111 At 8:22 you pointed to a dotted 8th note and you called it a 16th note, Why? Is it ok to do that because the dotted 8th equals 3 16th notes? And also, your second measure at 8:22 is a 16th note short of being of full bar at 4/4 time cause you have a 2 qtrs at 1 which takes us to 1 and, then a 16th at 2 and a dotted 8th which takes us to 2 e and ah, then a qtr note at 3 which takes us to 3 and, then a 16th and an 8th note at 4 which only takes us to 4 e and, then it stops. No rests?
