Many English country dancers are familiar with New York dancer and writer Linda Wolfe's article "In Step with Austen," published in the New York Times in 1997. It was the occasion for a great influx of dancers into the New York scene (over 100 showed up at the dance following the appearance of the article!). Coline Hume then wrote a dance in Linda's honor, called, naturally, The New York Times.
At the 2010 English Week, dancers from New York put on a party, one of the highlights of which was our dancing Colin's New York Times as it was surely meant to be done: Nobody paid attention to the caller; it was as crowded as Times Square at lunch hour; traffic was hopelessly snarled; and everyone had their head stuck in the paper--just like every Sunday in certain New York households.
Calls were modified to fit the occasion (cross over = cross word puzzle; single file circle = circle the ads; double 1/2 figure 8 = double 1/2 real estate section; and so on.
Special thanks to Peter Barnes, piano, and Naomi Morse, violin, for providing the music at a tempo designed to restrain our New York impulse to madly rush ahead.
