The song is a negro spiritual about Joseph. The guy on the drums was Ben Rose who's attending USC (rival to Melanie's UCLA).

Definitely a very nice voice, but her accent did annoy me a bit - not so much at the end.

She did have trouble using the Puerto Rican accent at first, but her director insisted she remain consistent.
