How much to water depends on the temperature, wind, amount of sun, type of soil or growing mix (how well it holds water and drains), and volume of soil for the roots. That said, your planters seem to be fairly small so the roots don't have much soil and thus need more regular watering. I don't know what the temperatures are in your area now, but I would think daily watering is needed. Regarding cutting back, just cut them back by about 1/4 or so; leaving several healthy leaves on each shoot.

How often you irrigate depends on the size of container, how much sun it is in and how hot and/or windy it is. Once a day is a good place to start, but in a lot of sun with a small container it may need watering twice a day.

How many weeks will it take to rejuvenate? I live in Georgia and its now the first week of August. I am putting my house up for sale next week and really need the beautiful blooms pretty quickly so if anyone could give me some advice I would appreciate it.

@beverlyannsjoblom - Beverly it depends on the weather/growing conditions. In mild conditions with water and fertilizer you should be back in blooms in a few weeks. With your home going up so fast I suggest you pull them and replant with African Marigolds (big pom pom type blooms in yellow/orange) or some other flashy annual.

Thanks for the helpful tip, I'll apply it this coming year. This year is the first time I have ever planted any. Sadly, mine have had a rough life and have survived, a small container, lack of water, to much water, summer heat and freezing weather and are still hanging in there, I will now be planting lots and lots of them, I will also treat them better.

I have my petunias in a rectangular wooden box on my balcony. I water them about 3 Liters a day and feed them soluble flowering food 2-3 times a week. I was very cheap this year and only got 6 tiny petunias but now it looks like I have about 20 petunias in the box. I do not trim them with scissors but they respond most excellent to that "abuse" I pinch the old flowers off so the plants don't go into shock or expend too much energy into repairing damaged tissue. The blooms are even more intense.

(continuing from previous post) ...the pink and purple ones are in a rectangular container approx 2 feet long and 8 inches tall and 6 inches across - they seem to be doing good (albiet a LOT shorter in height than the white ones) i'm really not sure if i am over/underwatering the white ones - can you help? Also, the white ones are considerably tall (maybe...8 inches or more?) at what height should i cut them as you demonstrated? Please please help I really want to make them last! Thank you!

This is the very first time I've ever had flowers and the first three weeks/to a month they've been very pretty and blooming like mad, but now they are starting to ..wither up - i'm not sure if i am not watering enough (i live in albuquerque nm and it is about 85/90 daytime and 60 ish at night.)
