I almost feel embarrassed to say this, but I feel that the arrangement is quite clever! Sure, to hear Beethoven's theme mixed with such rhythms is bound to produce some cheeziness, but after that (0:39), the improv and rest of the piece sounds quite genuinely jazzy and samba-ish.
The trick is to listen as if you've never heard the Pathetique sonata....
