This sober, yet amazingly beautiful Church and Ex-Convent was built by Dominican Friars under the directions of Fr. Jordán de Santa Catalina, around 1578. They built this Church away from the main road, so they could be as secluded as possible and without distractions. It was the monastery with the highest standars during the XVI century due to their strcit rules and discpline, since the monks would fast very often and get up at mid-night to offer The Maitines (Early Morning Service) in the Church. Fr.Juan de Mata, Vicar Fr. Juan de Berrio and Fr. Juan de Córdova, received ordination from this monastery and this last friar, learned zapotec and developed a very complete dicctionary, that was very useful for their preachings. They choose St. Jerónimo as their partron saint because his lifestyle matched their spirit and was deemed a very good role model for the principles they wanted to live by.
