He's making an ink-grinding stone for calligraphy or brush-painting, (sumi-e) The ink comes in a stick and must be ground with water, against the stone to make ink. The liquid ink stays in the resovoir

@lakristianla He is probably making it out of shale or slate. They are both a grey color and cleave very cleanly.

You could make anything out of that, if i was stranded and had this stone and tools i'had made armor and terrainsandals.
