Cady Anne Reynolds died on May 31st of 2007 as a result of 16yr old distracted driver who ran through a red light. In the wake of her senseless and highly preventable death, the C.A.R. Alliance for Safer Teen Driving (www.saferteendriving.org) was started to address the issue of distractions with teens and concerned adults and to encourage safer driving habits in all drivers. Crashes are the number one killer of teens in the US. It accounts for far more deaths than any disease, injury or even suicide. On average approximately 12 teens die each day to this nearly 100% preventable occurrence, yet it is not treated as an epidemic in need of a cure. More teens die each year than did on 9-11 or that did in all of the coalition forces in the first 4yrs of fighting the war in Iraq. Teens (15-20) are 4 times more likely to be in a fatal crash than any other age group- even before they pick up a cell phone. The biggest factors in these statistics are: driving experience, the maturity/risk taking desire of teens, passenger distractions, speeding, alchohol and distractions. Parents who partner with their teens to set strong ground rules and provide an example of safe driving techniques can reduce their teens' risk by as much as70%. No young person, including Cady, needs to die to make this point. Someone's choices causes this to happen againa and again. Crashes are not accidents; they are predestined to happen as we allow distractions and other factors impair our driving. Support cell phone and texting bans in your community- write to your congressional leaders and demnad that they act now to set higher standards for our roads. As the video says: "WHEN YOU ARE ON THE ROAD, GET OFF THE PHONE." www.saferteendriving.org
