"Lies My Father Told Me", (Canadian - 1975) Director: Jan Kadar - Pt. 1 of 8 - The story of David Herman, a young Orthodox Jewish boy growing up in the Montreal ghetto of the 1920s, and the deep love between him and his Grandfather Zaida (Yossi Yadin), a sweet and deeply religious man. David even loves Ferdelah, the old horse that pulls Zaida's junk wagon. His mother, Annie (Marilyn Lightstone), is warm and loving, but his father, Harry (Len Birman), has a modern mindset, is full of get-rich-quick schemes, and disapproves of David's ties to his traditional, and devout, grandfather. Ted Allan (Mr. Baumgarten), Henry Gamer (Uncle Benny), Barbara Chilcott (Mrs. Tannenbaum), Cleo (Cleo Pascal), Mrs. Bondy (Mignon Elkins). ***(Jan Kadar also directed "The Shop on Main Street")

  • just saw this on TV, but missed the beginning. this is now one of my top favorite movies!

  • @NoForgottenMemories Did you by any chance see it on Turner Classic Movies? I did, and just recorded a duplicate copy for myself. Isn't it a gem!

  • I loved the song at the end: "Rags, Clothes, Bottles" when I was a little kid. I haven't heard that song in 35 years!!

    Thanks for uploading

  • @Trund27 You're very welcome. BTW, do you cry when you hear that song? I do.

  • Literally, or symbolically?

  • I remember seeing this in the movies when I was eight! In retrospect it does not seem appropriate for such a young kid. But I do remember his grandfather reminding me of mine and crying my eyes out at the end! I'm getting teary eyed just thinking about it.

  • @rmas32 Being a Canadian film, I imagine it is more authentic, realistic and a bit sophisticated for a young child. Nice that it affected you the way it did. :)

  • This movie is about my great great grandfather :)

  • @chalomirof63 Right. Obviously at eight I didn't get the sexual overtones. I had the same special relationship with my grandfather growing up. I had a father who was rarely around so my grandfather filled that void. God I'm such a mushball! I can't watch this without thinking of my grandfather and crying my eyes out at the end of the movie! But it's a "good" cry. ;)

  • I saw this in 1975 - it has remained with me my whole life - wonderful film
