The Red Sox didn't back in in 1967. They won their last two games, then listened to the radio as the Tigers lost their final game and finished a game behind. That's not exactly backing in.
That would have worked I guess, but who would the Red Sox have played that 1 more game against? If it makes you feel any better, the Tigers had basically the same thing happen to them in 81' with the Brewers.
@robertmastroianni Exactly! That was very unfair that Detroit won the A.L. East Division. At least let the Red Sox play 1 more game. If the Red Sox won, then have a 1 Game Playoff between the Tigers and Red Sox. If the Red Sox lost, then you could say that the Tigers won the A.L. East fair and square.
@Jiltedin2007 Yes. There was a player's strike at the start of the 1972 season, cancelling the first week. The Tigers missed 6 games, the Red Sox missed 7 games. They REALLY should've made those games up, or at least had Boston play one more game to make it even. Finishing 1/2 game out was BS.
@Jiltedin2007 What about 1967? The Red Sox backed in as the Tigers had to play back to back doubleheaders against the Angels while the Red Sox sat in their locker room listening to the game rooting the Angels on?
Considering that this was 40 years ago, and as a Red Sox Fan, I really wouldn't care less! But the reason why the Tigers won the 1972 AL East Division over the Red Sox was because they played 1 more game than the Red Sox did.
1988 is when the Red Sox backed in! They lost their last 3 game of the season and 6 of their last 7 while the Tigers won their last 3 games!

Amazing, even after 40 years, the Red Sox fans are still whining. You lost. Get over it.

You're right about that.....And had Tony C. not been injured, the Red Sox more than likely would have easily won the pennant and the Series.
