Indira Priyadarshini Nehru, the only child of Jawaharlal and Kamala Nehru, was born in Allahabad, in Ananda Bhavan, on 19 November 1917. Her grandfather, Motilal Nehru, named her Indira after his own mother. She was one of the most important historical personalities of modern India, whose ideas and activities profoundly affected different spheres of public life and politics in India, and left an imprint on world affairs. She was the first and only woman Prime Minister of India.

In 1923, she was admitted to St. Cicilias, a private school in Allahabad. In March 1926, she accompanied her parents to Switzerland and studied there at I'Ecole Nouvelle. In December, 1927, she returned to India and joined St. Mary's Convent in Allahabad. As a teenager, she began to take active part in the freedom struggle.
