Nice one Stu ;-) saw these on the net but wasn't sure how they would work in a New Zealand context so thrilled to find your video!! Have ordered one from Carbatec and your mention of using broom handle from my favourite store solves my next question re 1 inch dowl... cheers mate, great work!!

@steelprunes They have sizes from 1/2" to 1 1/2" in that brand, although I can imagine others are available. I'm don't know about the UK woodwork scene, but there is a Woodwork Forum in the UK that should be able to provide heaps of information on local suppliers.
I will be trying some actual thread chasing on the lathe in the near future - the result may not be posted on YouTube (my videos tend to be too long), but check out Stu's Shed .com for my blog and on iTunes for longer videos.

have you cut any threads with a harder wood?

@gricka31 I've used both softwood and hardwood, and find the hardwood to be more successful - less prone to tearout (but it depends on the specific species). Softwood forms a thread easily, but tends to tear rather than cut.
