Please note that Late Mr. Mohammed Rafi was only about 27 years old, when he sang this difficult song!

"Baiju Bawra" is a 1952 Bollywood movie. Made in the Hindi language and directed by Vijay Bhatt, it stars Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari.

The plot centered around music, so it was a necessity that the movie's soundtrack be outstanding. Renowned Bollywood music director Naushad and lyricist Shakeel Badayuni created memorable scores for the movie, all songs being based on Hindustani classical melodies --ragas.

Esteemed playback singers Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, and Shamshad Begum, and renowned classical vocalists Amir Khan and D. V. Paluskar lent their voices to the scores.

The result was a critically acclaimed movie soundtrack. Famous songs from the movie include Tu Ganga Ki Mouj, Mohe Bhool Gaye Sanwariya, Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj, Aaj Gaawat Man Mero, O Duniya Ke Rakhwale, and Jhoole Mein Pawan Ki Aayi Bahar....

Mohammed Rafi (Hindi: मोहम्मद रफ़ी, Urdu: محمد رفیع; December 24, 1924 July 31, 1980), often addressed as Rafi Sahib, was an Indian playback singer whose career spanned four decades and is one of the most versatile male singers in the history of Indian cinema. Rafi sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada and Telugu. He also recorded English and Persian songs. He is primarily remembered, however, for his Hindi songs, which still remain very popular in India today and also among the Indian diaspora. He dominated the Bollywood music industry from the 1950s to the 1970s along with Mukesh, Manna Dey, and Kishore Kumar.

Between 1950 and 1970, Rafi was one of the most sought after singers in Bollywood.

In 1965, he was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Sri award.

On Thursday, July 31, 1980, Rafi died at 10:50 p.m., following a massive heart attack. His last song was "Shaam phir kyun udaas hai dost" (Aas Paas), which he had recorded with Laxmikant-Pyarelal couple of days before his death. He was survived by four sons (Saeed Rafi, Khalid Rafi, Hamid Rafi, Shahid Rafi), 3 daughters (Parveen, Nasreen, Yasmin) and 18 grandchildren. Naushad wrote on Rafi's Death- " Goonjte hai teri awaz ameero ke mahal me. jhopro ki gharibon me bhi hay tere saaz, yu to apne mousiki par sab ka fakr hota hai magar ay mere saathi mousiki ko bhi aaz tujh paar naaz hai "

Rafi's funeral procession was recorded on a very rainy day in Mumbai. A portion of that same recording has been used in one of the Hindi movie released later. It was one of the biggest funeral processions mumbai had ever witnessed, with over 10,000 people attending.

The Padma Shri Mohammed Rafi Chowk in the Bandra suburb of Mumbai is named after Rafi. Lata Mangeshkar quotes on Rafi- " saral man ke insan Rafisab, bahut suriley the, yea meri khus kismati hai ke maine unke saath sabse jada gana gaye. gana kaise bhi wo aise ga lete the ke gana na samajhne wale bhi bah bah kar utht te the. Aise gayak bar bar janam nahi lete."

A documentary about Rafis life is under production by The Films Division of India.

On September 22, 2007 a shrine to Rafi designed by artist Tasawar Bashir was unveiled in Birmingham. Bashir is hoping that Rafi will attain sainthood as a result.

RAFIJI & NAUSHADJI YOU ARE IMMORTAL IN OUR HEARTS

I read this song almost took Rafiji voice for ever. Because after recording he got blood oozing out from his mouth as he was practicing this song day and night for 25 days. Only after a month or so he was able to sing again.

    thanks and blessings

  • @mahesh1946 - Thank you my dear Uncle Uma for the very interesting comment about the Great Rafi Sahab.

I too wish you, Aunt and the family a merry Christmas and a very happy/prosperous new year, 2012.

    May God bless you all.

  • naushad sahab made another song for this place in the movie & that was already recorded.. everybody was so happy with the song but naushad sahab said he was not satisfied & few days later he came up with o duniya ke rakhwale and now we all know what magic he & Rafi sahab created in this one? as per so many critics this the sartaj song of the film industry..

  • @mohdrafihabib - If I may add a little my dear friend, Late Mr. Naushad was only 32 years and Late Mr. Rafi was only 27 years of age, when this masterpiece was created in 1951/1952.

    2 LEGENDS of OUR time!

    Thank you.

  • Great job Yuan.

You know this film is also a good example of Communal Harmony in India. It has some of the best bhajans of Hindus created by three Muslims.

  • @prajjwalit - Thank you my dear friend.

Though they are kind of sensitive matters, I always used to think of this positive way of "Communal Harmony".

What I came to know [from some of the comments like yours] is that Late Mr. Mohammed Rafi has sung hundreds of Bhajans.

What a beautiful things he and other artists did.

Very nice to think of these things, truly.

    Thank you.

  • this song is golden indeed. from my grandfathers generation to me, this song has been valued. This is one of my most favorite songs. im a 21 yr old individual living in Canada. However, songs like these will always make me cherish the fine art of indian music culture. Even i can say that songs of this generation are of no comparison to such a brilliant song.

  • It is very clear that only Shakeel Badayuni could write these lyrics, That only Naushad Ali could compose such a music and only Mohammed Rafi could sing this song. All three were par excellence Shakeel Badatuni's lyrics have been superb all through. He and Naushad Sahib have been making the best combination in the Indian film industry. Naushad Sahib, in one of his interviews, said that blood came out of Mohammedd.Rafi's throat after singing this song and he could not sing for fifteen days.

  • I agree. This must be the "creme de la creme". Many great singers have tried to sing this song. No one has come even 50% close to this. Only Rafi himself managed to sing it in the modern style in digital sound. If this not enough, we can refer to the rest of the songs of Baiju Bhowra. They are models and remain the foundation of Indian music. No other singers are missed as Rafi the guru is. The singer of all singers. The king of kings. The creme de la creme.

  • The one & only SIRMOLE ( Supreme ) song of all the songs sang till today by any Singer , in other words this is the Mother of all songs ,,, Really hats off to The Mohd Rafi , can't say more then this ..God bless him ....
