All Full Moons draw attention to themselves by the way they reign supreme over the night sky. They are so special that each one has acquired at least one name.

In North America, these names date back to the Native Americans, who had various names for the Full Moon during each month of the year. European settlers quickly adopted these names.

October's Full Moon is called the "Hunter's Moon" or sometimes the "Blood Moon" or "Sanguine Moon." It gets these names from hunters who tracked and killed their prey by autumn moonlight, stockpiling food for the winter ahead.

Enjoy this video about the Hunter's Moon that rose over Matagorda Bay, Texas, October 11, 2011. The show started at sunset and continued all night. Everybody was fishing.

  • Another beautiful thought provoking film:) The music was perfect! I learned about the moons when I worked at a casino...each entrance was set up like a season (temperature and lighting set to match!) and showed the seasonal moon...The hunters moon sure is a sight to behold!
