On some Vista computers Stereo Mix is not there (even if you do the "Show disabled devices") and the Dell 1720 is one of them. So, here's how I got Stereo Mix for it. It may work for other different computers, but I can't be sure.

  • No offense to you sinfulsolutionz, but DO NOT USE THIS. No matter what OS you have, it will screw it up. Luckily I put a system restore point right before I did this.

  • It's worked fine for me for over six months now, and some other people, I don't know why it works for some and not for others. That's why I put that warning on there.

  • Do NOT try to install the xp version of sigmatel when you have vistal, i tried it and now i have no sound at all with either the vista version or the xp version

  • You sure you done it right? Works perfect for me... This is the only way I could get it to work. Unless trying another "older" driver other than the Sigmatel one. Realtek or something? I don't know.

  • I have Dell Inspiron 1525.

  • Thank you.

ummm I did that before ( installing R171789 ) and it worked fine but, after doing that the microphone ( headphone ) didn't work, but the laptop microphone did work.. why is it like that?

btw, now when you go to dell website you won't find this file.. only (R180044)..

Release Date: 4/1/2008 does it make a difference?

if it still works I might try it..

    thank you!

  • This didn't work until I ran it as an administrator. To do that, right click on the shortcut and choose "run as administrator". Thanks, sinfulsolutionz!

  • omg awesome!! 5/5 stars, sub from me and here's the comment!=)

  • When did you get your inspiron? maybe because i got mine recently (june 2008) dell maybe did something to prevent xp driver to be installed???

Also, i can't use any ''what u hear'' recorder (freecorder, audacity,etc.). I can't get them to record the sound from my speaker, they only record my microphone on the integrated webcam.

  • well i have an inspiron 1720 too with sigmatel. I went on the dell support and downloaded the latest xp sigmatel driver available. I also cheched the xp compatibility mode like you did but after it have installed i had no sound at all (i had the speaker with an red X on the bottom right of the screen)

After that i couldn't even reinstall the vista driver and i had to make vista go back to a previous restore point to get sound back.
