I have loved this song since I first heard it. As a musician, I would love to remake it, but I know to leave well alone. Some things can't be improved or embellished. This is one.
This is a real tear jerker. It's interesting how they weave several solos into this and yet bring out beautiful harmony in other places. These guys were talented. Donald James Parker Author of Love Waits
My niece was named for this song. I love this version - goose bumps! And such wonderful individual soloists: Randy Sparks, Jackie Miller, Clarence Treat, Nick Woods, Gayle Caldwell, Clarence Treat again, and Dolan Ellis - if my ears didn't fail me - as well as the lush harmonies and clean guitar work. Sadly, two of them - Nick Woods and Gayle Caldwell - are deceased. Thanks so much for posting this!
My mother went to high school with Jackie Miller, who still sings with this group, and thus I grew up hearing all of their records. Barbara Ellen was always my favorite. I just got major goosebumps listening to it here!
I am a life long fan of Randy Sparks and the Christy Minstrels, this tune is an irish folk song from the 1800's and they do a wonderful job of it, it is classic Minstrels, they were the consumate folk group but are mostly forgotten, if you love American folk as I do give this a listen, check out Barry Mcguires "Eve of Destruction" a huge hit in 1965, Barry is a Mintrels alum, also "Green, Green" and "Denver" are available on youtube.
