It'd be best if you knew some Farsi. Persian music, especially ancient Persian music, is hard to research thoroughly in English.

There is a good book that was written in English about the dastgah system. I forget the title but it was written by someone at Cambridge.

who is an expert on ancient Persian music? how can i find the style of music "Darius The Great" listened to.

the persian musical scale is akin to the melodic scales seen in western music, and is infact borrowed from persian music. it is a more complicated scale that harmonic scales as the upward scale and downward scale, differ. however, unlike western music, persian music can also include quarter-tones, which are rare to see in western music where whole and semi-tones are predominantly used, mainly for the difficult most peoples ears have in distinguishing quarter-tones, they are very subtle.
