This was the first aircraft rescue I ever undertook and I did it for Brooklands Museum. It was in 1988 and the aircraft was a Vickers Varsity, which we moved from Sibson Airfield in Cambridgeshire to Brooklands in Weybridge Surrey. As this was the first major transportation of an Aircraft I had ever done we decide to seek professional help with the road logistics part. This was given by that excellent Middlesex company Savill Freight.

  • I am making a scale model of this particular aircraft, just seen the front of the aircraft with the letter T, so this video has helped me allot

  • Glad it was of use. Clearly I have more footage that was not used, so if you get stuck for anything else email me and I will try and help.

    Regards Andy

  • all done safely and not a high viz vest in sight ! well done

  • We did wear them honist, but had to take them off when filming in case they interfered with the Colour Balance of the video.

  • Interesting little Video

How much did the Belle cost to buy back then?

  • Well Spencer it was made for us to my design, by that Legend Gordon Jackson. The components from memory was - £4000 for the tractor unit (second Hand) The Crane was shipped from the USA and landed with TAX paid, was around £28,000 and then the body, extra axle and building was another £12,000 With the equipment Lights and Paint Job it must have been around the fifty grand mark when finished.

It is still on the road today with Langley Vale Recovery, but no longer front line.
