Have you ever had to experience RSV with a small child or infant? How did it turn out for you? At least half of you know what I am talking about because studies show that as many as 50% of children under the age of 1 year will contract the RSV illness and nearly all children under the age of 2 years will at some point deal with it. I was able to experience first hand the scary symptoms associated with what I believed was RSV, bronchiolitis, or possibly even pneumonia.
What is RSV?
Respiratory Syncytial Virus - history * Initial symptoms are nasal discharge, cough, and fever. * Cough typically progresses over 1--2 days, with tachypnea developing. * Duration of symptoms will help in the assessment of the typical clinical progression of illness and the anticipated time course for the child. * Other significant points within the history: o Lethargy, apnea, and possible cyanotic episodes o Dehydration is secondary to decreased oral intake as well as increased insensible losses. Assess oral intake and urine output to rule out dehydration. o Increasing respiratory distress o Child stopped breathing/had apnea.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus - prevalence * 50% of children are infected by their 1st birthday, with a similar attack rate for the uninfected child during the 2nd year of life. * 40--70% of preschool children and 20% of school-aged children are reinfected with exposure.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus - prognosis * The majority of patients have a mild to moderate disease course with symptomatic support. * Some infected children proceed to more serious illness, necessitating hospitalization. An average hospital stay for previously healthy children is 5--7 days; full recovery is 2 weeks. * Infants with underlying cardiac or pulmonary disease are at increased risk for more severe and longer duration of disease; mortality as high as 30%. * Reinfections occur throughout life.
When my 4th child was admitted to the hospital last year for Failure to Thrive after discovering my breastmilk had dried up (who knew? obviously not me) we spent a total of 4 days in the hospital. Out of 11 patients in Pediatrics during our stay, my Benson was the only one NOT in there for RSV. That 4 days cost us a whooping $5,000, but was well worth it to hydrate my little man since his good food source (me) was lacking tremendously. However, in most cases of illness much of what we see is the ambulance mentality of "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Studies show that 80% of all illness is preventable. When we get hasty to remedy illness and disease, the source of our solution almost always comes from the medical establishments in medicines and treatments to "heal" you. The reality is that nearly all medications are meant to manage and alter your symptoms associated with it, not necessarily alleviate your illness. So, if you are looking to restore and prevent you must look another way and the way that has been proven in our family and many others around me is CPTG essential oils. Why? Because essential oils are carbon based and we are carbon based organisms so, essential oils are able to penetrate our cells to assist our body in its own natural processes of healing. Yes!! Finally something that can attack a virus & bacterial infections instead of "waiting it out" with a couple of vitamin C's and an antibiotic. Most essential oils carry some if not all of these benefits on a grand scale: antibacterial, analgesic, antiseptic, anticancer, antifungal, anitviral, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, & antispasmodic. It's the ultimate immunity builder and completely safe, natural, with zero side effects.
So, are essential oils worth the small investment? As mentioned above, an average hospital stay for an RSV patient is 5-7 days and possibly longer for premature babies who contracted the RSV virus. The average cost for a preemies at the hospital for this illness is $18-22,000 dollars!! Even if its half that for full term babies, I'd rather be aggressive in treating my child in a more effective and holistic way beforehand with essential oils to protect them from the inevitable exposure to RSV and other associated illnesses in the future.

@xkim3x Thanks for the compliment! I've delivered all five of mine at home with a midwife as well! Some were water births, 2 were laboring in the water and then the delivery was out of the water.
