I have a crown with an infection at the tip of the nerve, i think i have a root canal there..its my front tooth...I am doing apicoectomy/surgery to treat it and came across this video...i was recommended an implant by the first dentist and apicoectomy by the second...what is the best solution?? i have to do something about the infection, and also the the tooth is getting darker by the day..WHAT can i do??

Presumably the answer is that if the original dressing needed a mixture of chlorhixidine and calcium hydroxide (because of e faecalis) the subsequent dressing will be unable to control e faecalis re-invading the micro tubles so this approach is perhaps safer as the final sealant is less toxic but not a viable solution because of e faecalis reinfection. A lot of dentists are now proposing this as a safe root canal alternative.

The theory being that the two initial 4 weeks treatments could 'sterilise' all the dental tubules (tests having shown this causes the whole outside of the tooth to acquire a high alkalinity thus, supposedly the high ph has killed the bacteria) and the calcium oxide would, having set, turn back into calcium hydroxide in the presence of re-invading bacteria and re-steralise the tooth before re-setting. Is this a viable alternative?

Namely, using a calcium hydroxide and chlorhixidine mixture (as the former doesn't work on e.faecalis but the latter does) and leave this in the tooth for 4 weeks followed by a re- treatment for another 4 weeks and then fill the canal with calcium oxide (Biocalex) a far safer sealant than traditional gutta percha.
I was searching for something else and accidentally fell upon this nonsense.
This video contains no scientific facts and if the author was medical/dentally qualified, they would be suspended for spreading such rubbish; thinly veiled as “science”.
If you want to know science speak to a QUALIFIED professional who will advise you on the science behind the facts, rather than this collection of arbitrary numbers this person has made up.
God only knows why you are preaching this excrement.

Thanks for the comment but you missed out on both counts. Yes I am a dentist and still registered in Australia. Secondly the documentary is fully referenced. What you have seen is only a preview and summary. The references are on both the movie and the associated website. Go back and watch the first 30 seconds for the url. In fact if you go to my dental website you will see even more glorious references. Not one word of this movie is without references .

I don't believe it is a totally safe alternative and would love to hear the thoughts of the author of the documentary on these issues.
Again thank you for your work in exposing these concerns so patients can try to make more informed choices.

So many comments in one day. Trying to answer all in one go. I have never seen one scientific published study which verifies the claim that Calcium Oxide will sterilise a tooth. the theory is good but the practical is not. Sterility is only one of the issues - It is impossible to sterilise, to remove all dead gangrenous material and also to seal the tooth. None of the aims of rct are achievable. Much more detailed info at my web site robertgammal com

Root canal therapy is predictable, safe and has a high level of success. There are many studies published in so called journals that do not satisfy the criteria required to consider them valid. So in essence if the studies are flawed they do not prove anything. Please show me your 5 best scientific articles that support your views on endodontics and I will show you that they are not valid.

EASY! Go and read none other than the publication from the Australian Dental Association, which is a review of the latest literature. IT COMPLETELY AGREES WITH ME Journal of the Australian Dental Association Endodontic Supplement Vol 52 No 1 March 2007
Cannot remove all dead tissue
cannot sterilise the tooth
cannot occlude the tooth
root filling cements are all cytotoxic or carcinogenic
Is there any way you can justify continuing this practice?
