Holden's Reef is a methogen-precipitated reef that is formed as a result of a chemical reaction between seawater and the escape of natural gas from the seabed.
This reef is a feature of the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation (SAC). It supports a diverse number of fish species, which can be used as an indication of the health of the reef. The Countryside Council for Wales' Marine Monitoring Team visits the site on a yearly basis in order to be able to report of the status of the of the reef.
