Fifty years after "Lassie" aired, former child star Jon Provost writes about his life during and after the hit television series. He talked to Harry Smith.
Jon is a SUPER nice guy and the book is a great read! Just ran into him again in San Francisco over the weekend.... down to earth and a real gentleman. Stars of today should take lessons, lol!
Actually,Ms.Cloris Leachman was the first actress to play "Mrs.Ruth Martin"on "The Lassie Show"..Mr.Jon Sheppard play"Paul Martin"..they left the show and they were replaced by Ms.June Lockhart and Mr.Hugh Reily.
Since CBS orig.aired the show, they shouldve done their homework, realizing Sept.'07 marked Jon's debut on the show. It's sad the orig.show w/Jeff is often not acknowledged,as is the case here.Imo,the Jeff eps.were better with a great chemistry between the cast.I enjoy the Cloris Leechman/Timmy eps. as they were prod.by Bob Maxwell who did Seasons 1-4 and the 1st year of the George Reeves Superman show which many feel to be the best season.Bob added more of an edge to his shows which imo was better
Some mistakes here.Lassie started on CBS in Sept.1954 starring Tommy Rettig as young Jeff Miller,Jan Clayton as his mother Ellen,George Cleveland as Gramps,Don Keeler as Porky and of course,Lassie.Jon[Timmy]joined the cast when season 4 began[1957NOT 1958]as a runaway orphan taken in by the Millers. After 13 eps.Gramps died[George died in real life]Jeff and Ellen sell the farm to the Millers who adopt Timmy.Jeff leaves Lassie w/Timmy feeling she's happier on the farm.CBS shouldve researched this.
I really think June Lockhart and Hugh Reiley were the PERFECT parents for "Timmy," Cloris and Jan to a lesser extent just didn't seem to have that "mom" look, and it really showed to me. June on the other hand was just terrific, the kind of mom any kid would want! She was also great in Lost in Space- another timeless classic that even today like the original Star Trek doesn't seem fake or "dated."
Jon looks terrific, always enjoyed the series and all the MGM Lassie movies.
Speaking of "Leave It To Beaver", CBS aired a 1983 reunion movie of the surviving cast members from that show, which I still have somewhere on the shelf with all my other VHS cassettes. This was a film dedicated to Hugh Beaumont, who had just recently passed away at the time....Richard Deacon, who played "Fred Rutherford" in that film has died since. As soon as I locate that movie, I'm switching it over to DVD.

Jan Clayton was also the first to sing 'If I Loved You' on stage.
Pop quiz--You will have something to talk about if you name the original Billy Bigelow.
