On May 26, 2009 the California Supreme Court made the wrong decision to, with a vote of 6 to 1, uphold Proposition 8. The fact that the 18,000 same-sex marriages performed before Election Day will stand is good news, but not good enough considering that Prop 8 took away the rights granted to queer folks in California.

Cities across America vowed to hold massive rallies regardless of the decision. In Chicago we gathered in front of the Center on Halsted, the gay youth and community center in the heart of Lakeview, the city's gay district. Unfortunately, the rally was a protest, not a celebration.

Let it be known that we wont stop fighting until all LGBT citizens have equal rights, from marriage rights to adoption rights to employment protection.

  • dude the black went through discrimination...and we now have a black president 30 years later....now we are going through gay discrimination....who knows maybe we will have a gay president 30 years from now?? :)

  • Most biographers actually agree that James Buchanan was already our first gay president, but it would be nice to 1) have a good gay president and 2) have an openly gay president

  • seeing is how there are some negative comments...i just want to throw in something posititve....

  • that is much appreciated!

  • "We are all tied together in a single garment of destiny . . . I can never be what I ought to be until you are allowed to be what you ought to be," said Coretta Scott King, quoting her husband Martin Luther King Jr. "I've always felt that homophobic attitudes and policies were unjust and unworthy of a free society and must be opposed by all Americans who believe in democracy!"
