Arthur Clifford Baynes was a school teacher at Crookes Endowed School, Sheffield, who also performed as radio and music hall comedian Stainless Stephen. Proud of his native Sheffield which was the centre of Britain's steel industry, he fittingly wore a polished stainless-steel waistcoat, bow tie and a bowler hat with a steel band. He specialised in monologues in which he also spoke the punctuation marks: "This is Stainless aimless brainless Stephen, semi-colon, broadcasting semi-conscious at the microphone semi-frantic." For his big finish, his waistcoat buttons lit up and his bow tie spun round
