ANCHOR:
We have a story of kindness to tell you about. A killer whale made it on the shores of Auckland, New Zealand, but the way she made it back to the ocean is what will strike you. Here's more.
STORY:
This young killer whale's size is one of the key factors that helped to save her life after she became beached in New Zealand. She came ashore in Auckland in rough seas. She's 3.4 meters long but animal experts worked out she was light enough to be carried by trailer along the coast to a calmer stretch of water.
SOUNDBITE: Unidentified conservationist saying (English): (DO NOT TITLE BAR)
"The police were extraordinary. They gave us an escort across Auckland, a bit extraordinary while traveling across the harbor bridge."
With rainy weather also adding to the whale's good fortune by helping to keep her wet, the trailer trip took an hour and a half.
The rescue was witnessed by Fabien Cousteau, grandson of legendary marine explorer Jacques.
[Fabien Cousteau, Marine Enthusiast]:
"I think we got special treatment being able to be a part of this fantastic endeavor."
The reason why the whale became beached isn't clear but this is a stranding story with a happy ending. Ten minutes after her return to the sea in smoother conditions she was on her way, apparently heading back out into open waters.
