I had an idea similar to this a while back. When you file your taxes you would be asked what programs you support and only pay for those programs. Against the war? You don't pay for it! Don't support Medicare? You don't pay for it! It would be interesting to see which programs got funded if it worked that way.

I have been saying the same thing to all my liberal friends. If you think the government is doing a great job with our money and we need to pay more taxes....DO IT. No one is stopping you. Set the example...or shut up. Because the truth is, you really just want OTHERS to pay more taxes. Again, Penn has it right...if you believe in higher taxes, because the government is so darn good at spending your money...then GIVE GENEROUSLY.

Rich people do have the option of paying more than they need. Instead of itemizing their deduction which helps rich people the most, they can just take the standard deduction. Also, you can write a check to the treasury.  So Warren Buffet, if you think your money is better off with the government, then write them a check.

@kuhlraum Democracy gives the people the right to be thier own oppressors. In order to keep the mob from voting in the dumbest of fads or low brow whim we are supposed to elect people with good character and competency to run the affairs that the public can not reasonably do privately. The constitution is supposed to keep these elected officials and the mob in check {IE you cant vote to rape someone (mobocracy) or give too much authority to a con artist (elected officials)}, unless u ignore it
