Second vortex experiments of 2010. The little tornado got up to 2.8 meter high this time! The stability of the surrounding & drive air, is much better than last time, but it can still be improved a lot. A huge tornado can be dangerous, but a small one like this is very fragile. If the conditions aren't just right, it disappears in less than a second.

  • This is amazing, I've never thought it was possible to reproduce this phenomenon artificially.

  • @Ocktus Now you know :-) Try it yourself, it's fun to do! A vortex will create itself if you set up the right conditions.

  • so if I understand this correctly:

the top hole is the sucker and the bottom is the smoke blower?

  • @leviterande . That's right; there's a big sucker above, that also gives a spin to the outgoing air. The blowers below provide the most motion for the spin of the vortex, in the same direction as the spin of the big sucker. The table on the bottom collects smoke from a smoke machine. There are little holes in the table top, where the vortex can suck the smoke out.
