From September of 1990 -- NBC News "Today" debuts their new set...Bryant Gumbel, Deborah Norville & Joe Garagiola who returned to the show in June that year and remained until 1992. Garagiola was originally with the show from 1967 - 1973 and was brought in as a "second co-host to Gumbel" due to lack of chemistry with Norville. Norville formerly anchored "NBC News at Sunrise". By January 1991, Norville's role was diminished and when she departed the next month on maternity leave...she was replaced by Katie Couric and never returned.. Part 2 of 2.

  • Not shown here is the honest assessment of Gumbel, Norville, Daniels and Scott at the end of the program (just before 9 a.m.). As I recall, Daniels complained that her telephone did not fit in her phone drawer at the news desk. Willard Scott launched into a diatribe about chromakey. He absolutely hated the chromakey map (if he wore green clothes, for example, the map projected onto them). Scott complained that with chromakey, he could not "preach" to the audience. He loved the old magnetic map.

  • Whoa, I thought Willard had ditched the hairpiece by then.
