This is Sheriff Woody. How Stupid.
Sheriff Woody, more commonly referred to as simply Woody (created May 26, 1995), is a fictional character that first appeared in the CGI animated film Toy Story, and its sequel Toy Story 2. He is voiced by Tom Hanks in the Toy Story films, and by his brother Jim Hanks in other media.
History
Before Woody became Andy's favorite toy, a puppet version of him starred in a TV show called "Woody's Roundup" which also included the characters Bullseye the horse, Jessie the yodeling cowgirl, and Stinky Pete the prospector. However, the series was cancelled after Sputnik was launched, causing space toys to become the new craze among children. The same characters were also depicted on a breakfast cereal called "Cowboy Crunches".
Character
Woody is an old-fashioned pull-string cowboy doll. The voice-box that is activated by the pull-string says many simple phrases such as "Reach for the sky!" and "You're my favorite deputy!" As mentioned in Toy Story 2, his construction includes a "original hand-painted face, natural dyed-blanket stitched vest, and hand-stitched poly-vinyl hat". He is Andy's favorite toy since kindergarten, with a special spot on the bed, and is the leader of the toys in Andy's room. In Toy Story 2 it is revealed that he is based on the main character from a 1950s popular TV Show, "Woody's Roundup". When Al Is bargaining with Andy's mom in an attempt to take Woody, Andy's mom declines Al's bargain saying it to be "an old family toy." Stinky Pete also directly refers to him as a hand-me-down toy later in the movie. In Toy Story 3, Woody, under Mr. Potato Head's orders plays a prominent role on Rocky by spinning him on the air. Woody watches the Super Bowl XIX with the other toys. They stole it from a TV station called NBC. He is voiced by Tom Hanks in the two films and by his brother Jim Hanks on other occasions.
Although he has been deemed the boss in Andy's room, Woody is somewhat of a flawed character as seen in both movies, as he has random bouts of jealousy, anger, frustration, and feelings of inadequacy regarding his role many times. He was once described by Buzz Lightyear as a "sad, strange little man" and did little to dispel this accusation.
Inspirations
Woody is inspired by director John Lasseter's favorite childhood toy, a pull-string Casper the Friendly Ghost talking doll. PIXAR Animator and Director Bud Luckey designed the character and came up with the idea of making him a cowboy.
Personal Life
Woody has several close friends in Andy's room, including his "deputy", Slinky Dog, Mr. Potato Head, a green dinosaur named Rex, and his closest friend Buzz Lightyear. It has also been revealed Woody is romantically involved with Bo Peep. In his spare time, Woody enjoys playing the guitar. Woody also makes daily appearances at the Disney's California Adventure Park in Anaheim, California.
Merchandising
Many replicas of Woody seen in the Toy Story films have been produced by Hasbro for the Disney and Pixar coorporations. Many others have been produced by Hasbro in sets along with other Toy Story characters, primarily Buzz Lightyear and Jessie the cowgirl.
