Modesto Nieves, cuatro guitar master

This excerpt shows Modesto Nieves, a living legend of the Puerto Rican cuatro, demonstrating the improvisational freedom that occurs when one achieves complete mastery over one's chosen instrument. Modesto has taught and /or mentored legions of students and contemporary masters such as Edwin Colon Zayas, Michael Camarera Cruz, Orlando "El Mostro" Santiago, Eddie Lopez, Christian Nieves (his son) and many many others. Modesto is joined here by his brother-in-law KAKO MALDONADO on guitar. Xavier Dominguez on Guiro. Performance is at a popular restaurant in Barranquitas, PR known as "EL TAQUITO DE LA VACA". The trio appearance quickly evolved into a "Bohemia" as world-class musicians Kacho Montalvo & Christian Nieves and others joined the festivities. Modesto currently performs with his children Monika and Christian Nieves in the world-class ensemble known as "Herencia Musical" as well as Grupo Mapeye (Puerto Rico's preeminent tipico music ensemble) and Areyto.
