Can anyone give me a compelling reason why this is better or even complementary to a laptop with DAW software, VSTs, and a decent MIDI keyboard? Isn't this just catering to people who refuse to finally change over to a computer?

What a strange looking keyboard. Every product I ever purchased from Alesis broke within 3 years. They sure are not a quality company but they do have great ideas for musical instruments. Too bad.

I don't know why you guys don't like this. If you take it straight out of the box and judge it from the stock patches, yeah, you could say it sucks. But once you delve a little deeper, start doing them from scratch, it actually sounds pretty awesome. And the feel on the 88-key one is great.
