You're right that this is a chemical reaction, this kind of fire is known as metal fire like burning magnesium in high school chemistry class. A lot of people don't know this but looking at this kind of light can easily damage your retina. This is the reason why welders wear face mask to shield from the arc lighting.

Actually, we did cut the power. There was some sort of chemical reaction or something that continued to work it's way through the coil. Cutting the power was the first thing I did. Not only that, but on the far right side, where it started, the coil had a complete break and wasn't even connected.

Sparklers in the oven! Awesome. To douse the sparkler effect, you could have cut the power to the oven, by flipping the breaker. But, that is not as fun for the kids.
can the coil be replaced, my oven just did this to me aswell??
