Here's Part 1 of a newscast that aired on local CBS affiliate KPIX on February 19th, 1985. Thanks to my Aunt & Uncle for recording this.

News stories include:

1. Crippled China Airlines Flight arrives safely at SFO (It's pretty incredible that this plane didn't crash)
2. Plane Crash in Spain
3. Car accident in Vegas
4. Roosevelt Solomon executed in Georgia
5. Kevin Cooper convicted of murder
6. Debate over controversial police chokehold in Berkeley
7. San Francisco Police Chief under criticism ("It's no secret about my boat..." Shady character indeed)

  • Dave McElhatton is a class act. A newsman's newsman. That guy had more professionalism in his left elbow (seen here at 4:44 while on a coffee break) than half the chumps on cable news today.

    R.I.P. Doug Murphy.

  • I'm well aware of how it's pronounced in Spanish. The magical thing about languages is that they take foreign words and make them their own. If the English language didn't, Spain would be España and Germany would be Deutschland.

And to English speakers Iberia, while retaining its native spelling, is pronounced [eye-beer-ee-uh]. Feel free to find some dictionary site with audio pronunciations to confirm this.

Anything else you want me to explain to you?

  • That announcer heard here in the KPIX open also did WOR TV in NYC around this time he is Phil Tonkin.

  • A few 26-year-later updates (thanks to Google and Wikipedia)--

The China Air incident was determined to be caused by pilot error, caused in part by the pilots' jet lag.

Kevin Cooper was sentenced to death, and is still on death row, proclaiming his innocence. In 2001, he was able to get DNA testing on the blood at the scene. Too bad for him that the evidence proved he was, indeed, guilty.

Chief Murphy would retire at the end of 1985. I wonder why can't more reporters have eyepatches?

  • @Darren50001 I remember back from 1992 to 1996 Tokuda went to KNBC in LA to team up with Paul Moyer and another ex KPIX reporter and fill in NBC News Correspondent Colleen Williams. Tokuda never fit in on an LA although she is a great anchor but she fits in San Fran. Also I wish I seen some Dave McElhatton clips from KCBS radio. I never knew Dave was a radio guy because I was born in the Reagan Era

  • @sflnewstv2 RIP Dave one of the best anchors in SF

  • RIP Dave McElhatton 1928-2010

  • RIP Dave

  • R.I.P. Dave McElhatton. :( ...

  • RIP Dave Mc Elhatton
