He actually had friends, he even said it. Dianna Ross was even close to him, you can tell by the bond they had. Idk why people say he was lonely, he had people that loved him no matter what, some people like Michael just struggle and battle by the way they were raised that they don't realize the people who want to be there for them so they close they're doors so they can avoid any more pain. Especially what Michael was going trough because of the media.

He was so lonely.. I feel lonely too I do, but never as much as him. He HAD to be lonely he had no other option. He couldn't trust people to be his friends because they would use him for his money... ;( It's so so sad to think that he died really because there was nobody there beside him to help him get through all the garbage they wrote about him. He even wrote in his book that he would just like someone to be his friend simple as that. Too bad some people pass through each other...
