Cinta Bahasa in Ubud, Bali, offers small-group and private courses in Bahasa Indonesia / Indonesian language to foreigners visiting or living in Indonesia. Students not only receive a textbook and learning materials, but are also given tasks to perform in the community.
Ubud is known worldwide as a place that is very popular with foreign and domestic tourists. Behind this, however, is the fact that many foreigners want to learn Bahasa Indonesia while they are here.
Jesse: I am from America, California, and I've come here to volunteer with a community in west Bali.
Although she is only here for 6 weeks, she feels she needs to learn to speak Indonesian.
Jesse: I like to learn Indonesian language in Ubud. Why? it's a good thing to do, I think it's important to be able to talk to people in their own language.
For Stephen, who has been travelling back and forth to Indonesia over the past 11 years, didn't waste any time in starting to learn the language.
Stephen: There are a lot of advantages to being able to speak Indonesian. I have a lot of friends, I feel a part of the community, and I feel safe. So I help my friends, those who are not able to speak Indonesian. The school which has been running for the past year and half share classroom space with Campuhan College, which provides technical training to disadvantaged Balinese youth. Cinta Bahasa's group course is quite intensive at 40 hours of classtime in a month. Students receive a textbook and flashcards to study at home, but that's not all. Ochie: We encourage students to get out of the class and practice their Indonesian in the community, such as to Ubud Monkey Forest, where they are given specific tasks to practice. A group course will cost 4.500.000 per month, while private classes are 200-250.000 rupiah per hour. Alya Thamrin reporting from Ubud, Bali.
